The Metro DC-Virginia State Referee Program joins referees in Michigan and across the U.S. in mourning the death of John Bieniewicz who passed away from injuries sustained while officiating an adult soccer match near Detroit on Sunday, June 29, 2014.
During the month of July, as a show of unity and support, referees may shroud their referee badges by placing a small strip of black tape or material horizontally across the center of the badge. (Electrical tape works well.) In addition, a moment of silence may be observed before the start of any match.
Our heartfelt sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Mr. Bieniewicz.
As posted on the website for the Michigan Referee Program, a memorial fund has been established to support the Bieniewicz family at http://johnbieniewiczmemorial.com/.
