The referee communities of Virginia, D.C., and Maryland mourn the loss of Ray Greenberg, who died on November 30, 2022, at age 77.
Ray served in multiple senior leadership roles during his 35 years as a volunteer with the youth soccer community, including Chair of the National Capital Soccer League (NCSL) Rules and Disciplinary Committee, President of NCSL, Chair of the Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA) Adjudication Committee, Vice President of VYSA, and President of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Association.
At a burial ceremony on December 4, Ray’s family and friends spoke of his exceptionally strong moral compass, never wavering when it came to doing the right thing. In countless soccer disputes brought before him for resolution, Ray would expend many hours and days discussing the issues and listening to everyone involved – always seeking a resolution that was fair and just. He possessed the most incredible and generous heart — and he radiated this warmth to everyone in his orbit. When it comes to love languages, Ray’s was clearly Acts of Service. Perhaps his ultimate strengths were patience and fortitude, standing firm for doing right and rectifying wrongs in the face of formidable and emotional opposition.
Ray’s unwavering insistence on promoting good sportsmanship on the field, while demanding respectful discussions off the field, created and built an unparalleled positive youth soccer environment in the Metro D.C. region that still serves as a national model. We already miss him.
