Denise Edwards, President of Virginia Youth Soccer Association, and Jim Sadowski, President of Metro DC-Virginia Soccer Association, announced last week that Patrick J. Delaney has been appointed Chairman of the State Referee Committee. Pat becomes the third chairman of the SRC and takes over from Gil McCallister who resigned after serving in that role since January 2001.

Pat is a National Referee Emeritus and a State Assessor. Pat’s refereeing career spans all segments of Virginia soccer including professional, senior amateur, and youth matches. Highlights of Pat’s refereeing accomplishments include being selected as one of 12 Referees to officiate the US Amateur National Championships, working as an assistant referee (AR) for the US Men’s National Soccer Team training matches in preparation for World Cup qualifiers, and also being selected as AR for the US-U17s vs. Mexico match performed in Oneonta, New York, home of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Pat’s soccer background began with Virginia soccer at an early age, where he played for many of the Northern Virginia travel teams including Annandale, Braddock Road, and Little River and on the Virginia U-16 State Select team. After graduating from Bishop Ireton High School, Pat went to the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. Upon graduating from West Point, Pat began his Army career in Germany, where he continued to be involved in soccer by playing on a German semi-professional team. He also played for the Nurnberg Military Community Soccer Team which won the US Army-Europe Soccer Championships 2 of the 3 years Pat was with the team. Throughout his military career, Pat was never far from the soccer pitch. As an Assistant Professor of Systems Engineering at the US Military Academy from 1995-1998, he was also an Officer Representative of the Army Men’s and Women’s soccer teams. Also, while in New York, Pat began to seriously pursue his refereeing career. Pat eventually found his way back home to the District of Columbia-Virginia area in 1998 as a USSF National Candidate. He has been an active referee within the District of Columbia and Virginia continuing to work youth, amateur, and professional games.

In taking over the position of Chairman of the SRC, Pat said, “Gil McCallister and Larry Monaco have set high performance standards as Chairmen. They are tremendous assets that I hope will continue to provide counsel to the soccer community and to me. I am honored to join a talented group of people who share a passion in soccer. Their hard work has resulted in a nationally recognized referee program known for producing talented referees that support the “Beautiful Game.” Our youth and amateur leagues look to us to do just that, as well as maintain the integrity of the game. I look forward to working with the leagues, the entire SRC and representing all of the referees that make up DC-VA Soccer.”
