We have lost a soccer icon in our region.
It is with great sorrow that we report the passing of Greg Watson. Greg was the Chairman and State Referee Administrator for the Maryland Soccer Referees Program, who used soccer to enrich the lives of so many referees and our families throughout the mid-Atlantic states.
Greg is renowned for his positive mentoring and support. Referees remember him for always willing to give a welcome hug with a big smile. We envision him as a big teddy bear with the heart of gold. His constant smile was contagious, and his laughter warmed the coldest rooms. After receiving a tough assessment, referees could count on Greg to comfort and motivate them to come back better than ever. A true friend!
Greg never sought the limelight and ALWAYS had the best interest of referees at heart. He was a visible presence at U.S. Soccer Regional and National events. Leaders from U.S. Soccer, US Youth Soccer and US Amateur Soccer would seek out Greg’s wise and honest advice and opinions on policy and strategy.
Greg made the game Beautiful.
His legacy of genuine friendship and selfless service to others will live on in all of our hearts and minds.
Greg... you are always just a thought away and each time we think of you it will bring a smile to our faces. See you in heaven someday brother! You are probably discussing with God right now on how to better support and improve soccer officiating. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. God bless you!
