Welcome to the first step in becoming a soccer referee!
You must be age 13 or older to become a soccer referee.
You will need to complete three phases of instruction: Online, Classroom, and Field instruction.
If you will be 18 years old or older after July 1, 2019, you will also complete SafeSport certification and a background check.
Cost is $80 and will be paid online via credit card in two steps. You will pay $60 when you register as a referee, then $20 when you create your online training account.
- Online instruction is conducted via the Metro DC-Virginia State Referee Program and the US Soccer Learning Center. Most new referees need 4-6 hours to complete the online instruction.
- Classroom instruction is scheduled at various locations and lasts 2-3 hours.
- Field instruction is scheduled at various locations and lasts about 4 hours.
- Classroom and Field instruction sessions will be scheduled as one clinic.
Upon successful completion of all phases of instruction, you will be certified as a Grassroots Referee.
We provide step-by-step directions to guide you through the process of creating a profile and registering for the online course and in-person field/classroom clinics.
You will set up two or three USER IDs and Passwords: one for the Metro DC-Virginia State Referee Program, one for the US Soccer Learning Center, and if applicable, one for SafeSports. As these logons are each needed for your referee certification, you MAY use the same USER ID and Password for all three accounts.
